Acoustic Trauma

Acoustic trauma is a hearing injury in the inner ear usually caused by sharp, sudden, very loud noise. It is a common cause of hearing loss and is usually treatable. Acoustic trauma is usually experienced when there is a sudden burst of sound close to the ear such as in a firecracker blast, explosions or gunshots. It can also be caused by prolonged exposure to loud noises such as blaring music or heavy machinery.

The usual symptoms of acoustic trauma are:

• Hearing loss – typically concerning high-frequency, high-pitched sounds
• Tinnitus, or constant ringing in the ear
• Symptoms that slowly get worse over time

What test is needed to diagnosed acoustic neuroma?

The healthcare provider may require the patient to undergo an audiometry test to determine the extent of hearing loss.

What are my treatment options?

Depending on the cause and extent of hearing loss, it is possible that the condition may not be treatable. Under this circumstance, the patient may be required to use a corrective device such as hearing aid or wear ear protection to prevent further hearing damage. The patient may also be taught skills such as lip-reading to compensate for the hearing loss.

How can it be prevented?

• Use ear plugs or ear protectors, especially when working in environments where there is noise from guns, chain saws, heavy machinery, aircraft engines and other devices making loud sounds.
• Avoid listening to loud music for extended periods.
• Be aware of the risks of exposure to loud sounds.
